This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

'Useful Idiots For Greenwashing'?
The group (a 'popular combo' as they would say in 1960's English) Coldplay, has claimed to have deep concerns about the emissions generated by pop music tours. They have, however, received much criticism from conservationists for accepting touring sponsorship from Finnish oil company Neste (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/may/11/coldplay-labelled-useful-idiots-for-greenwashing-after-deal-with-oil-company). Neste claims to be the world's biggest producer of 'sustainable' biofuels. Conservationists, however, point out that Neste's biofuels use palm oil. Neste's palm oil suppliers cleared at least 10,000 hectares of forest in Indonesia and Malaysia between 2019 and 2020. This was done to plant palms. This was much to the detriment of endangered Orang-utan populations, persecuted for damaging palms. Clearing the forest also certainly didn't help counter climate change. In addition, biofuels are burned and release their carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere (so they are not really 'sustainable'). Planting a tree for every concert ticket sold, sounds a nice idea. These 'trees', however, are likely to be tiny conifer 'whips', located in colder areas of the globe. This planting will do very little to replace the carbon sink lost by the Indonesian and Malaysian forest clearances. I expect that Coldplay don't currently have many Orang-utans amongst their fans? The group appear to have been 'used'.
