This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Carnivores to Gobble Up the Herbivores?
The meat substitute market is predicted to grow from $4.2bn in 2020 to $28bn by 2025. Predictably, 'Big Meat' and the Food conglomerates, are already threatening to push out smaller producers of meat alternatives (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/may/10/meat-alternatives-industry-threat-monopoly). For example, JBS and Cargill (meat producers) have recently invested heavily in both plant-based proteins and laboratory-grown meat. The latter is meat that doesn't need to be slaughtered. The name of the game is, of course, maximising their profits from food sales. Just don't expect to see the name of the parent company on many of their 'new' products!
