This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Billionaire Blaze
Residents of a rural town, near Queenstown in Central Otago, New Zealand, have been upset by what they see as a pyromaniac billionaire 'out-of-towner' (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jan/03/burned-the-hill-down-billionaires-runaway-fireworks-spark-new-zealand-furore). The New York billionaire insisted on going ahead with his private firework display, on New Year's eve. He ignored a petition from locals, concerned about the effects of the display on their animals. The fireworks set off blazes, eventually burning 0.5 hectares of land. The residents now want a ban on all private firework displays. The billionaire seems to think he has been generous. He informed his neighbours of his plans and offered to contribute to the cost of moving animals out of the area. Billionaires generally arrive in locations with high expectations of privilage!
