This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Slip Sliding Away
New data suggests the planet's glaciers are fading away much more quickly than was expected (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jan/05/half-planets-glaciers-gone-2100-even-under-paris-15c-accord-data-finds). 'Greenhouse gas' emissions, at their present levels, will result in global heating reaching 2.7 degrees Centigrade above pre-Industrial levels (forget keeping 1.5 alive). That will result in losing 68% of the Earth's glaciers by 2100. At least half that loss, is scheduled to occur in the next 30 years. A loss of glaciers on this scale, would have catastrophic effects on droughts, flooding, sealevels etc. It's not a happy prospect. Things, of course, could get a great deal worse, if 'greenhouse gases' are pumped out at ever inreasing volumes.
