This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Get a Car, Or Else!
The campaign group Bike is Best surveyed 2000 representative Britons. The survey results suggested that millions of Britons are trapped in transport poverty. This is by the perceived lack of viable alternatives to car ownership (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/jan/09/entrenched-car-culture-leaves-millions-of-britons-in-transport-poverty). The survey revealed that almost half of the survey respondants, believed that owning and running a car was their only option. Even folk who were disposed to using a bicycle for short journeys were put off by a lack of safe, local infrastructure. People who owned a car on average spent 13% of their pre-tax income on keeping it on the road. This seems likely to be increasingly difficult for some folk in a 'cost of living crisis'. Travel on bikes, buses and trains all need to be stimulated, by making it safe, cheap and reliable. It would also be good for the environment.
