This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Skimming 'Potatoes'?
Applied Mathematicians (The University of Bristol and University College London) have produced a model, predicting that more impressive skimming can be achieved by using potato-shaped stones. This runs counter to the general belief that thin, flat pebbles produce the best performances across the water (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/jan/04/potato-shaped-stones-are-better-for-skimming-say-experts). This is not, however, simply an entry for the IgNoble awards (where weird science is rewarded). The model is being developed to predict the effects of wing ice, changing the flight characteristics of aircraft.
