This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

'Take a Soak in Your Sumptuous Stone Tub and Relax to the Crackling Sounds of the Roaring Fireplace'
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) have vigourously campaigned about the pollution produced by wood burning in the home. They maintain that, such fires (including 'trendy' wood-burning stoves), produce more small particle emissions than all UK road traffic! Small particle emissions are damaging to human health, including that of the heart (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jan/08/a-roaring-fireplace-the-polluting-raffle-prize-from-the-british-heart-foundation). Money is currently being raised by Omaze for the BHF, in a 'Million Pound House Draw'. The prize, in this 'charity' draw, is a £3m Islington (London) house. It has a fire pit on the garden terrace and open fires throughout. It appears that 'the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing'. People are pointing out that this seems a wholly inappropriate venture for the BHF to be involved in.
