This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Green Versus Machine?
On the 2nd of May in Hastings (England) two very different events occur simultaneously. One is the 'Jack in the Green' procession, where people (including the spectators) dress up in foliage. 'Jack' is a dancing, tree-like entity who 'tries to escape' the attentions of attendant Morris dancers, giant figures, drummers etc. Eventually, 'he' is captured and burned (without the person inside) on a hillside. This reputedly enables the summer to start. Very old-fastioned and green-orientated! Meanwhile, near the sea-front, a massed gathering of bikers, zoom up and down the roads on Harley-Davidsons etc. Massed emissions are produced. It's quite a contrast.
