This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

For Peat's Sake!
Peat bogs store huge amounts of carbon. Bogs are consequently of considerable importance in countering climate change. In spite of this, these 'wetlands' are 'raided' to extract potting compost for gardeners. A number of 'climate concerned' gardeners have now demanded a UK ban on peat compost (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/apr/02/climate-concerned-gardeners-demand-uk-ban-on-peat-compost). The signatories note that, the current 'gentleman's agreement', to reduce the use of peat compost is not working. In deed, only 1 of the 20 leading garden retailers will end the sale of peat compost in 2021. Alternatives to peat have been available for decades and government regulation (that was promised some time back) is clearly needed.
