This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Gates Keeper?
Nick Estes has an interesting opinion piece on US farmland and the mega rich (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/apr/05/bill-gates-climate-crisis-farmland). Estes points out that Bill Gates is now the largest private owner of farmland in the USA. Gates owns more than 970 square kilometres, nearly the size of Hong Kong. Another member of the mega rich tribe, Ted Turner, owns more than 8000 square kilometres of ranch land, including the world's largest buffalo herd. Estes notes an Oxfam calculation that the world's richest 1% have double the carbon footprint of the poorest 50%. He suggests that, far from being interested in sustainable farming, the rich see land acquisition as power. Estes thinks they are intent on protecting so-called 'green capitalism', by using their land ownership to claim their businesses are carbon neutral. Estes does not seem very impressed by Bill Gate's environmental credentials (inspite of Gates' recent book). The issue doesn't stop with Gates and Turner, as 1% of farming companies, control 70% of the world's farmlands. Profits before environmental responsibilities?
