This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Vaccine Passports?
It is often claimed that the British have never had to carry Identity Cards. This is collective amnesia, as the World War 2 documents illustrated above attest. The debate has been reignited by more than 200k signatures garnered by a petition, urging the UK government NOT to introduce vaccine 'passports' (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-56202975). The 'passport' (or certification), if it comes about, could be a paper document but is more likely to be an updatable app. This is probable, as a holder's status might well change, as new variants of Covid-19 appear. The document's validity might well also alter, as we learn more about the durations of protection offered by a) being infected by Sars-CoV-2 or b) receiving a vaccine. The results of tests (e.g. lateral flow) to detect the presence of the virus, seem too fleeting to warrant any kind of certification. There is a possibility that any 'passport' could be forged. The authorities favouring 'vaccine passports', claim to want to facilitate safe foreign travel (the EU favour this) and/or participation in mass events (such as watching a concert, a play or a sporting event). The people objecting to this proposed documentation (they come from across the political spectrum), claim it will lead to a 2 tier society. Some people would be unable to get access to support and freedoms that others have. The already marginalised, are likely to be hardest hit. Some even argue, that a 'passport' requirement, could be used as leverage to get vaccine reluctants to accept the jab. There would be no 'free choice'(but when has it ever really existed?). There are some areas where 'vaccine passports' seem inevitable. Foreign travel and working in Care Homes are likely candidates. I'm uncertain, however, about their appropriateness now for attending large events. It could be very divisive, if the old and wealthy can do things that the young and poor cannot. Perhaps we need to wait until a higher proporation of the population have been offered the vaccine? We would also have to consider how to help people (e.g. the pregnant), who are currently unable to receive the vaccine.
