This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Cereal Killers?
At last, a sensible decision by a court of law. Kelloggs failed in their legal challenge against UK 'high sugar' cereal rules (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/jul/04/kelloggs-fails-in-court-challenge-against-uk-high-sugar-cereal-rules). After much resistance, the UK put the 'high sugar' cereal rules in place in an attempt to reduce childhood obesity. Obesity is linked to many health problems including type 2 diabetes. It costs the NHS millions every year. The Kelloggs, makers of 'Frosties' and 'Coco pops', were upset at being banned from offering BOGOFs (Buy One Get One Free). They wanted, even their most sugary cereals, moving from the BOGOF-banned, 'less healthy' category. Kelloggs argued that, as the cereals are normally eaten with milk, this neutralises the sugar content. The judge disagreed. Even Kelloggs can't be too surprised, as the company markets some of its products as 'having 30% less sugar'!
