This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Old MacDonald Had Some Microplastics
A pilot study of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam found microplastics in 75% of beef and pork products. It also found them in 100% of blood samples from these farm animal species (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jul/08/microplastics-detected-in-meat-milk-and-blood-of-farm-animals). Every sample of animal pellet food tested also contained microplastics. This confirms a major route into the bloods of farm animals. It is already known that microplastics are found in human blood and can lodge in our organs. These iny pollutants are now almost ubiquitous, so we need more urgent information on their likely impact on human health. It would be interesting to know if microplastics are absent from plant and fungal alternatives to 'real meat'. It may also be possible to keep them out of laboratory-grown meat, as no pellet food is involved?
