This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

And We Wonder Where the Tidal Wave of Plastic Comes From?
The NGOs Greenpeace and Everyday Plastic, carried out a survey with responses from nearly 250,000 people, from almost 100,000 UK households (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jul/12/uk-dispose-of-100bn-plastic-packaging-year). The survey's responses suggest that Britons dispose of nearly 100bn pieces of plastic packaging per annum. Only 12% of this is, however, sent for recycling. This survey is based entirely on self-report data, with all the usual attendant limitations. It's entirely probable that the survey's participants included many environmentally-aware folk, attracted by the Greenpeace name. The actual percentage of single use plastic packaging sent for recycling, by all UK households, might well be considerably less. We need to use much less single use plastic packaging and recycle all of it! Otherwise, we will drown in our sea of plastic.
