The Price of UK Higher Education

The 'cost of living crisis' is having a major impact on many students in UK universities. The National Union of Students (NUS) carried out a survey of 3500 university students. The survey found that circa 33% of these subjects were left with only around £50 per month to live on, after paying their rent and bills (https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/jul/11/students-food-banks-cost-of-learning-crisis). The NUS survey also found that the number of students having to use charitable food banks, had doubled to 11% since January 2022. 96% of students surveyed were having to consider cutting back, as a result of soaring prices and bills. It's clearly very difficult to study effectively, if you can't eat, keep warm or even buy needed sanitary products. Of course, students from richer backgrounds will always be able to join Oxford University's notorious Bullingham club (as did Messrs Cameron and Johnson, at the time of their studies). The 'cost of living crisis' is making higher education an even less level playing field.

Food For Thought?

The link between global heating and food prices is clearly illustrated in a recent CarbonBrief ( https://www.carbonbrief.org/five-charts-ho...
