This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Not Science As We Know It, Jim?
The World Health Organisation estimates that, between 10 and 20% of people infected with Covid19, experience symptoms for at least 2 months. This is termed 'Long Covid' and its sufferers are often permanently tired and characteristically develop 'brain fog. These symptoms make returning to work next to impossible. An investigation by the British Medical Journal and Independent Television has found that thousands of UK Long Covid patients are travelling abroad for unproven 'therapies' (https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/jul/12/thousands-seeking-unproven-long-covid-blood-treatments-abroad). That investigation found that UK Long Covid sufferers were paying thousands of pounds to clinics in Cyprus, Germany and Switzerland. The 'therapies' included apheresis (or 'blood washing') and anti-clotting procedures, neither of which have been subject to proper scientific investigation. UK medical experts believe that these costly procedures, whilst probably providing no benefits, risk harming the patients. Some Long Covid patients are likely to have been made desperate by inappropriate responses to their symptoms by some medics, employers and government bodies. Given the high levels of Covid19 infections (and reinfections?) in the UK, Long Covid is likely to become an increasing medical challenge. Urgent solutions are needed but these need proper scientific trials.
