This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

But Big Oil Claims to Be Green?
BP and Shell have been boasting about their profits in 2022. They have also, however, been claiming to be 'investing in 'green' technologies 'for' the UK'. Unfortunately, their veneer seems to be amazingly thin. Both companies seem keen to locate and extract yet more oil and gas in the North Sea. They think it only right, however, they are given tax breaks to do so. It's now claimed that BP has dumped thousands of tonnes of their industrial waste in a Marine Protected Area (MPA) near Shetland (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/jul/06/bp-accused-of-dumping-industrial-waste-marine-protected-area-shetland-regulator-clearance-oil-firm-pipe-cables-drilling). MPAs are supposed to be an essential element of marine conservation. They actually receive very little real protection. Apparently, BP were given permission by a 'decommissioning regulator' to dump their old oil piping and control cables in the MPA. 'Decommissioning regulators' presumably don't care about environmental protections? If the dirty deed indeed happened, I'm sure BP were very reluctant. Such 'green' folk surely wouldn't dump their trash there just to save money!
