This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

London's Burning
The 40+ degrees Centigrade temperatures, resulted in Tuesday 19th July being the busiest day for the London Fire Brigade (LFB), since the blitz of World War 2. On a regular day, the LFB gets around 500 calls. On Tuesday, it got 2600 (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jul/20/heatwave-led-to-london-firefighters-busiest-day-since-second-world-war). Grass was 'tinder day' and in places, entire streets of houses were destroyed, along with their parked cars. Londoners have been told not to have barbecues but some right-wing newspapers think this advice encourages people to be 'snowflakes'. Perhaps Londoners will eventually forget what a snowflake is?

Given the clear advice, it seems remarkable that the UK government slashed the numbers of fire-fighters in the preceding years. A somewhat 'false economy'?
