This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Booze For the Elderly Only?
A Global Burden of Diseases Study maintains that only 'mature' folk get any benefits from drinking alcohol (https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/jul/14/alcohol-is-never-good-for-people-under-40-global-study-finds). That study concluded that people, over 40 who drank a small glass of red wine each day, had a slightly reduced risk of cardiovascular disease ('heart attacks'); stroke and diabetes. One must emphasize that this applies only to a small glass and to red wine. All other alcoholic beverages and any larger volume has negative health consequences. The study confirmed that, the health of people under 40, was always impaired by alcohol ingestion. Men, aged 15-39, predictably had the greatest risk of harmful alcohol consumption. I can't see brewers, distillers, vintners and the hospitality sectors emphasising the conclusions of this report. Even the positive influence on the over-40s is generally translated by the media as 'Red wine is good for you!'
