A Climate -Friendly, Cancer-Friendly Initiative?

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have approved a Chevron refinery in Pascagoula, Mississippi, producing jet fuel from discarded plastics. The iniative is claimed to be a 'climate-friendly initiative to boost alternatives to petroleum'. The intended process produces, however, carcinogens (cancer-causing compounds) carrying a much greater human risk than is generally allowed by the EPA for 'new' chemicals (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/feb/23/climate-friendly-us-program-plastics-fuel-cancer). Although attempts will be made to prevent the discharge of the carcinogens, having a house near Chevron's refinery, seems a dodgy prospect. Making 'biofuels' from discarded plastic seems far from being 'climate-friendly'. Even if were the case, adding to human risk, to achieve such an aim, is not the way to go. The EPA should discourage this type of initiative. We actually need less plastic and reduced numbers of jet plane flights!
