This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Not Our Kind of Welsh Hero?
23rd February 2024 was the 300th anniversary of Richard Price's birth in Bridgend, Wales. Price was an 18th Century Moral Philosopher, Non-Conformist Preacher and Scientist. He helped shape the US Constitution, championed Women's Rights and opposed slavery. He even developed maths, used to this day, by Insurance Companies. Price is, however, almost forgotten in his native Wales (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/feb/23/home-village-hopes-greatest-welsh-thinker-richard-price-finally-receives-his-dues). Perhaps it all comes down to the country's heroes normally being sportsfolk or singers? There was a similar failure to recognise the importance of Alfred Russel Wallace who, independently of Charles Darwin, developed the theory of evolution. Perhaps we don't like our heroes too cerebral?
