This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Lab Rat Longevity
Sima, a female Sprague-Dawley rat, has achieved a record age of 47 months (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/feb/08/anti-ageing-scientists-extend-lifespan-of-oldest-living-lab-rat). Sima is the last of a group given frequent transfusions of plasma from younger rats, to see if this extended their lives. Although the transfusions appear to have enabled the rat to attain really old age, I can't see this as a viable means of banishing the effects of time. It's more likely, I suspect, to result in some rich folk undergoing expensive, but unnecessary, tranfusions in profit-orientated private clinics.
