This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Where's the Beef (From)?
The UK's National Farmer's Union (NFU) are concerned about a recent trade deal with Mexico (yet another Brexit 'freedom'). They argue the deal could 'pave the way' for the import of 'high carbon Mexican beef' (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/feb/21/robots-and-cow-mattresses-168m-to-be-invested-in-farming). The NFU maintain that UK beef is produced using higher (and hence more expensive) standards. The union also notes that Mexican beef has been linked to deforestation. Transporting the beef, on refrigerated marine transport, to the UK will also generate substantial volumes of 'greenhouse gases'. As folk are being encouraged to consume less red meat, using health and climate change considerations, this seems a retrograde step. Will the increased emissions be credited to Mexico or the UK?
