This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

In a NutShell?
Global Witness suggest that oil giant, Shell, should be investigated and fined for its 'greenwashing' (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/feb/01/shell-renwable-energy-spending-sec-global-witness). Shell claim that, in 2021, 12% of their capital expenditure was funneled into a division entitled Renewable and Energy Solutions. Shell illustrates the division's activity with pictures of wind turbines, solar power etc. Global Witness maintain that actually just 1.5% of Shell's capital expenditure could be described as being used to develop genuine renewables. The remainder is directed to 'natural gas', which is certainly not renewable. Shell certainly appears intent on a full 'greenwash'. It seems likely, however, that the oil giant has chosen the wording of its documents to maintain maximal ambiguity. Perhaps Shell expected to be challenged?
