This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Salad Days Gone in UK Supermarkets
Poor weather in Southern Europe/North Africa and reduced planting in Dutch greenhouses, seem to account for fruit and vegetable shortages in UK supermarkets. ASDA and Morrisons supermarkets are limiting their customers to defined quotas for particular produce (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/feb/21/asda-morrisons-ration-tomatoes-peppers-fruit-shortages). The storms in the Mediterranean have reduced the Spanish pepper harvest by 30%. Supplies of broccoli, cauliflowers, cucumbers, lettuces, peppers, raspberries and tomatoes have all become problematic in the UK. Climate change and the Ukraine war's increased gas prices are combining, to reduce UK supplies of cheap and healthy fruit and vegetables.
