This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Signed and Sealed?
Four dead seals, washed up on a Scottish beach, have tested positive for Avian 'flu. This brings it to 70 Mammals, including Otters and Red foxes, who have been infected with the 'bird' virus (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/feb/10/four-dead-seals-test-positive-bird-flu-scotland-aoe). The likelihood of Avian 'flu jumping to Mammals seems to be quite high. In the earliest Bird 'flu pandemic, the UK government paid for the production of anti-virals to treat a potential human outbreak. They went unused and it's striking that no real preparations seem to be forthcoming this time round. Covid19 seems to have taught this country's politicians remarkably little?
