This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

There's Money in Misinformation!
Journalists have exposed the activities of a 'Team Jorge' in Tel-Aviv (Israel). For more than 20 years, this secretive contractor has used hacking, sabotage and automated social media disinformation, to manipulate elections around the globe. Team Jorge, in its various guises, has been active in Africa, South and Central America, the USA and Europe. A fee of between 6 and 15m euros is suggested as being acceptable for interference in an election. Team Jorge also sell their services to private companies (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/feb/15/revealed-disinformation-team-jorge-claim-meddling-elections-tal-hanan). Team Jorge claims to have created 30,000 Avatars, with fake social media profiles, to magnify any message their employers want to put out. Hacking, sabotage and automating social media disinformation are obviously very lucrative. They are not, however, a variant on advertising. Team Jorge's activities could well be fatal to the very concept of democracy. I wonder if 'Big oil' and climate change deniers are/have been using their services?
