This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Overselling Formula Milk?
Formula milk manufacture, for feeding human babies, is a multibillion dollar industry. A substantial Imperial College (London) survey evaluated this industry's marketing claims about its products. The survey found that the wide range of health and nutrition claims about baby formula, were generally based on evidence that was 'weak and biased' (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/feb/15/most-health-claims-on-formula-milk-not-backed-by-evidence). The primary focus of marketing is, of course, selling stuff. Formula baby milk is, however, not simply 'food'. It seems highly inappropriate to direct misleading information at the parents of neonates. These individuals are already under considerable pressure and are in no position to properly evaluate the competing claims of products, for feeding their babies. The advertising claims of baby formula firms ought to be subject, by medical and regulatory bodies, to the same level of scrutiny as is directed to new drug treatments.
