This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Agonising About AI?
An enormous amount of attention has been directed towards the dangers of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It's even been suggested that this 'tool' might end up replacing the necessity to work, and possibly humans themselves (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/nov/02/top-tech-firms-to-let-governments-vet-ai-tools-sunak-says-at-safety-summit). I don't remember the same fuss when Personal Computers (PCs) became the norm. To me, AI just appears to be an extension of that technology. If AI causes the extinction of humans, it's likely it will soon follow. AI requires an enormous amount of electricity to maintain its server functioning (its impact on current 'greenhouse gas' emissions, is hardly mentioned). Unless AI systems can find ways of maintaining electricity supplies in the absence of humans, they are screwed!
