This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

The Great Uncapping
Ice is being rapidly lost from both the North and South polar regions. This melting, will not only raise sea levels over the entire planet, it will further exacerbate global heating. Ice loss reduces the albedo effect, reflecting a proportion of solar energy back into space. The French President has recently announced spending a further 1000m euros (£880m) on polar research between 2023 and 2030 (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/nov/12/emmanuel-macron-pledges-1bn-to-fund-research-into-melting-ice-caps). We know already 'we have a problem, Harfleur'. It's, of course, always good to get more detailed information on the scale and speed of the problem. Might it not be better, however, to spend that money urgently attempting to counter climate change?
