This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

From the Ashes?
Phoenix, Arizona is the US's hottest city. In 2023, it had a 50% increase in heat-related fatalities. Almost 600 folk (mainly the 'unhoused'), died in the heatwaves (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/nov/11/phoenix-heat-deaths-record-climate-crisis). It seems extraordinary, that deaths on this scale, should occur in a modern US city. It's clearly a reminder, that climate change (whether you 'believe' in it or not), will exert an increasing toll even in developed nations. 2024 is likely to be even hotter!
