This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Damaging and More Expensive?
Wood burners are popular in the UK. There was a 40% increase in their sales between 2021 and 2022. This has happened, in spite of well-documented concerns about their emissions of particulates (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/nov/11/wood-burners-more-costly-for-heating-than-gas-boilers-study-finds). It's well-established that particulate emissions cause human respiratory damage to both house residents and those outside the home. Air pollution, from wood burners, has actually doubled in the UK in last ten years. Some councils have even considered banning or restricting wood burner use. The charity Impact on Urban Health have now shown that wood burners cost at least 15% more than gas boilers or heat pumps, when used for home heating. Perhaps it's aesthetics that appeals to wood burner enthusiasts?
