This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Ploughing the Streets of Chelsea
Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) have been jokingly dubbed 'Chelsea tractors' (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56647128). It seems, however, that the perception of them is remarkably accurate. 75% of these large, fuel-hungry, 4-wheeled drive vehicles in the UK, are owned by city dwellers. SUVs are capable of crossing a river but most are used on the school run. They are obviously bought more for signalling status than for their performance. People should think whether mobile displays of wealth are appropriate, when climate change is a major concern. Displaying them to children makes them even less appropriate.
