This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Denialists?
Jonathan Freedland suggests it is all too easy for we 'informed and rational folk in the UK', to laugh at the anti-vaxxers and climate sceptics (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/aug/13/denial-anti-vaxxers-climate-sceptics). Freedland goes on, however, to illustrate that the US's 'Covid culture wars' are no laughing matter. That country is not dealing with a tiny minority of people without real power. Their actions (especially by state Governors) will have real and lasting impacts on that country. Freedland also points out the existence of 'behavioural or practical denialism'. This is seen, when people accept the facts about climate science, without changing the way they live. In such cases, these people are acting in the same way, as if they were climate change deniers. The upshot is exactly the same. Freedland notes that 'behavioural or practical denialism' can be seen in the actions (or inactions) of governments (e.g. the recent call by the US government for more, cheaper gasoline) and individuals (their insistence on flying for foreign holidays or sticking to a meat-dominated diet). He suggests that fear is at the heart of denialism?
