This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite
In English, the motto of France is 'Freedom, Equality, Solidarity'. A nice sentiment. David Robert Grimes (Physicist and Cancer Researcher) points out that French objectors to 'Vaccine Passports' appear more hung up on their personal freedoms and entirely fail to consider solidarity (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/aug/15/vaccine-passports-are-less-a-threat-to-liberty-than-a-mark-of-solidarity). Grimes points out that vaccination doesn't just provide considerable protection for the vaccinated, it reduces the dangers for people who come into contact with them. People meet up in bars, restaurants, cinemas, concerts, clubs etc. Sars-CoV-2 is largely transmitted as infected (they don't always know they are carrying the virus) persons breathe, speak and sing. There was a similar pattern of events historically, with the vaccination drive against the scurge of Smallpox. Some people refused to be jabbed and were fined for endangering others. Eventually, Smallpox was eradicated as a human disease. Grimes also records that several diseases (e.g. measles) have recently reappeared as vaccination rates have fallen (e.g. after the MMR/autism link scandal). He also points out that people rarely claim their individual freedom entitles them to drive at speeds well in excess of limits. Society has rules. What we do, has impacts on other people. Individual freedom isn't everything!
