This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Get Your Electricity 'Greenwashed'?
The UK government appears to be finally becoming concerned about the 'greenwashing' practised by some large energy companies (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/aug/15/renewable-electricity-deals-investigated-by-uk-government). The energy companies frequently use phrases such as '100% renewable' and 'green' in attempts to sell their services to customers. These terms are sometimes pretty meaningless. They can, for example, be based simply on signing a contract with a solar or wind farm to take that farm's entire output. That energy can, however, sometimes be a very small fraction of the electricity supplied by the company. Some big energy firms have been overselling the environmental benefits of their provisions. Greenwashing is rife in many areas of politics and the economy. Advertising standards agencies used to deal with misleading statements.
