This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Wipe-Out!
Newquay, in North Cornwall, is one of England's prime surfing and partying locations. After ceasing all Covid19 pandemic-related restrictions, the Boardmaster's Music and Surfing Festival was held there (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/aug/26/newquay-cornwall-becomes-england-covid-capital). The Boardmaster's event attracted thousands of young people, from all over the country. All, intent on having 'a good time' Many of the participants had, of course (they were largely young), not been vaccinated against Covid19. Question: 'Who could have predicted that Newquay would become 'England's Covid capital', with almost 5000 cases?' Answer: 'Almost anyone'! Carriers of new infections have now dispersed far and wide back to their homes.
