This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Bad Advice
Old (and sometimes confused) folk in the UK, receive an annual Winter Fuel Payment. The intention of this payment was to reduce the risk of hypothermia in pensioners. I was surprised to receive mine in an envelope urging me to shop around for the best energy deal as I could 'save up to £290 a year'. I thought, at that time, 'Haven't they heard about the energy crisis, with many of the smaller suppliers going bankrupt'. The advice has now been strongly critisized (https://www.theguardian.com/money/2021/nov/13/energy-bills-uk-government-accused-of-sending-out-bad-advice). Confused pensioners, following the envelope's advice, would have been generally making their situation much worse. There are no savings to be obtained by 'shopping around'. Still, I suppose the envelopes had been printed and they didn't want to waste them?
