This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Wild Weather in the West
In summer 2021, the Pacific NW had record temperatures. This led to many devastating fires e.g. in NW Canada and Washington State (USA). The same region has now been hit by record rainfall, producing widespread flooding and landslides (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/nov/15/canada-floods-evacuation-wildfires-rain). The destruction of forests by wildfires, reduces the effective binding of soils. Rainfall then provides a perfect recipe for landslides, especially in areas with inclines. Welcome to the world of climate change. And, we are currently 'comfortably' below the 1.5C pre-industrial global temperature rise guestimated to 'save' the world from the worst ravages of climate change!
