This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Can't See the Trees (Solving the Climate Crisis)?
At Cop26, lots of people enthused about trees as a potential solution to climate change. Trees are, indeed, effective removers and storers (until they are burnt) of atmospheric carbon dioxide. An Oxfam study has suggested, however, that using only land-based carbon removal (that would include tree planting and reforestation) would require 1.6bn hectares of new forest (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/nov/13/the-problem-with-fixing-the-climate-with-trees-were-going-to-need-a-bigger-planet). 1.6bn hectares is an area roughly equivalent to Brazil plus Australia or 5 Indias. It is also more than all the farmland on the planet. As they say, solving our problem with trees alone, is going to require a bigger planet.
