This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

I Have Never Known Aussies to Want to Be Last Before!
The Climate Change Performance Index at Cop26, ranked the Australian government's policy response to the climate crisis as rock bottom (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/nov/09/australia-ranked-last-of-60-countries-for-policy-response-to-climate-crisis). The Index used the government's dearth of policies, as well as the country's:- high per capita 'greenhouse gas' emissions; weak targets; low levels of renewables and high levels of energy use, to give Australia the lowest score out of 60 nations. Australia refused to sign up to commitments to reduce carbon dioxide emissions or to stop burning coal. Coal is the dirtiest of all the non-renewable fuels. Australia's Resources Minister maintained, however, that his country would 'produce as much coal as other countries would buy'. This seems a tad greedy and a tad arrogant. Even the Saudis, intend to (eventually) stop their production of oil. It seems odd for Australia to have such a poor environmental profile. Australians, in general, have always appeared to embrace an outdoor style of living. They have also been blighted by wildfires. It seems very likely that Cop26 will result in Australians declining greatly in the estimation of many of the planet's other inhabitants.
