This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Can't Even Believe the BBC
Just watched the BBC's Bargain Hunt programme. Two contestants were given the challenge of buying an 'educational item'. A plaster model was purchased. This was described (by experts, contestants and auctioneers) as a model of the human gut (gastrointestinal tract). It was very clearly a model of a kidney nephron with the Bowman's capsule. It seems extraordinary that nobody ever corrected them. A gut and a nephron are nothing like eachother (except being tubular), they are on different scales and serve entirely different purposes! Not much education there!
