'Freedom Day' and An Unhappy NHS Consultant?

It's 'Freedom Day', in England! Most of the Covid restrictions are axed but people urged to be cautious, as they go clubbing in Fabric (and elsewhere). Concomitantly, people returning from holiday in France, are being required to self isolate. France is an amber country (no quarantine generally required under the new rules) but it is claimed to have a high incidence of the beta (South African) variant in some of its regions. The incidence of new Covid cases is actually much higher, in the UK than in France. The beta variant does show worrying vaccine resistance but allowing Covid cases to escalate (as in England), risks the development of new viral strains anyway. French ministers clearly don't understand the 'logic' of the English ruling. In any normal world, the French should be restricting access for English tourists, to stop them bringing in the highly transmissible delta variant (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/19/uks-restrictions-on-travellers-from-france-excessive-says-french-minister). So, why is our NHS consultant angry? Much of it must stem from shear collective fatigue. This has been an awful time for people on the front line. Some of the anger clearly relates to the illogicality of 'Freedom day'. The consultant feels that the dropping of restrictions could have been more gradual and have allowed more time for vaccinations. He/she also wants to know why people are being belatedly instructed to behave responsibly when, unlike the government, they won't have access to the data. The consultant also notes that, when rules are relaxed, people will, quite reasonably, relax their behaviour (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/19/i-work-in-an-nhs-covid-ward-and-i-feel-so-angry). The consultant is clear that the 3rd wave of Covid infections is underway. Although vaccinations have made a difference to deaths/ hospitalisations, a major increase in the infection rate will result in more people finishing up in critical care units. Other respiratory diseases (RVS; influenza and parainfluenza) are also increasing at the present time and patients will compete for ventilators. He/she notes that it will be difficult to isolate these cohorts, in what is likely to be a horrendous winter. The consultant knows we will have to learn to live with Covid. He/she says we also have had to learn to live with the dangers of road traffic. The government response to the pandemic, could be said to be like dealing with the danger of road traffic, by deliberately dashing in front of speeding articulated trucks (my poetic licence on his/her original analogy)!
