This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Not Just People?
It goes, without saying, that the estimated 500 people in British Columbia (Canada) who died in the heat dome over the Pacific North-West, constitutes a tragedy. This is likely to be the news from that area, most people focus on. There have also been, however, massive impacts on other organisms, even including marrine life (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jul/08/heat-dome-canada-pacific-northwest-animal-deaths). A marine biologist, operating on the shores of Vancouver Island, estimated that 1 bn marine animals were killed by the heat dome over Canada's coast. This was after he walked on masses of mussels that had been cooked in their shells by the temperatures. One billion can only be a 'guestimate' but the observation more than suggests there will be major changes in the ecologies of areas impacted by the heat dome. Climate change knows no boundaries, so organisms everywhere will be seriously challenged.
