This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Going for 'Gold'?
International scientists (1,200 of them) are not taking too kindly to England's unilateral abandonment of all Covid restrictions on the 19th of July (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/16/englands-covid-unlocking-a-threat-to-the-world-experts-say). The scientists, including specialists from Israel, Italy and New Zealand, dismiss England's 'freedom day' as an 'unethical experiment'. These scientists fear that the move is likely to unleash vaccine-resistant variants on a battered world. In its capacity as a global transport hub, England is well-placed to do precisely that. The country has already done a trial run by disseminating the delta variant. The UK has had a pretty good scientific reputation. The International scientists are consequently somewhat amazed that England appears to be neither following science nor even basic public health principles. We appear to be world class (at trashing our own reputation). "Nobody loves us and we don't care!"
