This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. Plants We Used to Use 2. Coltsfoot
Back in the old days, people in parts of England used to dry the leaves of Coltsfoot and smoke them. The practice was supposed to relieve asthma. A Lancashire confectioner (Stockleys of Oswaldtwistle) subsequently used an extract of Coltsfoot leaves as an ingredient of Coltsfoot rock. I remember gnawing on the chalky confection as a kid. It is still available.
