A Technofix Enthusiast For German Chancellor?

Armin Laschet is the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) frontrunner to become next German Chancellor. Worryingly, he appears to think that innovation and market incentives will solve the climate crisis (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/09/joint-co2-targets-must-not-diminish-german-industry-cdu-leader-warns-eu). Laschet claims to be committed to climate neutrality by 2045. He wants, however, no restrictions on consumer behaviour. Laschet would not support increased taxes on air travel (a major source of greenhouse gases). He also wants no ban on combustion engines (in spite of many people thinking a move to electric vehicles is essential). Laschet seems to worry that EU collective endeavours, such as a joint greenhouse gas target, might damage the prowess of German industry. Laschet also seems to trust the German steel and chemical industries (major 'greenhouse gas' emitters), to honestly get to carbon neutrality with technofixes. I seem to remember a major German car company cheating over its vehicles exhaust emissions. His basic argument appears to be that 'we are an industrialised nation and must be allowed to do things differently'. Isn't this what you call 'having your torte and eating it'?

Putting a Different Construct On It?

Steel and cement production release massive amounts of climate-altering 'greenhouse gas'. These materials are, of course, much used...
