This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Hot Holidays?
A heatwave is currently over South-East Europe, with temperatures, in some places, reaching 40 degrees Centigrade (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/31/tourists-rescued-mediterranean-beach-turkey-wildfires-heatwave). The heatwave has predictably resulted in wildfires in Mediterranean locations in Turkey, Greece and Sicily. In Turkey, 6 people have died and 500 have been taken to hospital for treatment (usually after inhalation of smoke). Holiday makers, in threatened Turkish hotels, have also been evacuated from beaches by flotillas of small boats. Such extreme weather events will happen more frequently as a consequence of climate change. Holiday makers, who arrive by air (the vast majority), are part of the problem. Their mode of transport, generates substantial emissions of carbon dioxide. This heats the planet up even further. But, as we repeatedly hear, 'everyone is entitled to a holiday'.
