This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

A Deflating Feeling?
The UK 'Climate Direct Action group' Tyre Extinguishers are keen to deflate the tyres of all Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs). SUVs are sometimes known as 'Chelsea tractors', especially when being used on school runs in affluent parts of London. SUVs are certainly gas-guzzling cars that are rarely used for actual 'sport'. They are more a status symbol (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/mar/18/tyre-extinguishers-deflating-suv-tyres-as-a-form-of-climate-action). Predictably, Tyre Extinguishers have received lots of abusive emails from irate SUV owners. Less predictably, they have also received many statements of solidarity. In deed, from around the world, Tyre Extinguishers have been asked about how to safely deflate SUV tyres. SUVs appear to be 'Marmite' vehicles. People either love them or hate them! They are certainly generally inappropriate.
