This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Should We Be Grateful He Hasn't Demanded a Return of Steam-Powered Vehicles Fuelled By Coal?
US Senator Joe Manchin is described as a 'centrist' Democrat (whatever that means!). He has been 'pouring cold water' on a suggestion to phase out diesel and petrol-fuelled cars in the US (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/mar/15/manchin-reluctant-electric-cars-biden-climate-crisis-fight). Manchin apparently has no concerns about climate change. He also presumably doesn't care about the many deaths linked to vehicle emissions as they reduce air quality. It is suggested that his positioning (he has a key vote in a wafer-thin majority), make it highly improbable that his government's climate crisis fight, will ever see the light of day. In fairness, his first responsibility must be to his sponsors. They got rich on coalmining in Manchin's home State. It seems extraordinary, to most folk, that one apparently unremarkable man should have sufficient power/lack of conscience to trash the entire planet to get re-elected. Electric cars are certainly not a complete answer but they might go a little way towards decreasing the US's mega-emissions of 'greenhouse gases'. Stopping using coal, for energy production, would be another. The sponsors, however, wouldn't like that at all!
